Just how big is England?

While researching my family's history, I found that almost all of my ancestors came from England or Wales. Naturally, this prompted a growing interest in the United Kingdom. Knowing the geography and history of our ancestral homes is an important part of genealogy.

For some reason I always pictured England being a much larger country than it is. Perhaps my misconception was due to the sheer number of English people in America, or maybe because of the grandeur of the country itself, but it wasn't until I broke down the numbers that I realized that Oregon actually covers more area than the United Kingdom does!
