Biography

Austin Miles Daniels (or Daniel) was born in Campbell County, Virginia, abt. 1811. He married Mary Ellen Wilkinson on January 7, 1837 in Morgan County, Missouri. He followed the Oregon Trail to the west, arriving in Benton County in August of 1851. His family was counted in the enumeration of Benton County in 1854 (no town given) and on the census in Soap Creek (near Corvallis) in Benton County in 1860. His wife, Mary Ellen, died on Dec. 20, 1870, at Albany, Benton County. On Aug. 2, 1877, Austin registered to vote in Camp Grant, Humboldt, California, and on Sept. 24, 1888, he registered at Rohnerville, Humboldt, California. It is said that Austin died in Benton County, Oregon, after 1892, but I believe it was more likely California, but if he was buried in Oregon, he may rest in Lone Fir Cemetery in Alsea, where his daughter Emily (Taylor) is buried or in Palestine Cemetery, where his son Thomas is buried.
