Elizabeth was a daughter of Thomas Fones II and Anne Winthrop, sister of Governor John Winthrop.

Elizabeth Fones married first to her cousin, Henry Winthrop, son of aforementioned John Winthrop. While she was pregnant with their daughter, Martha, Henry fled to America on the ship Talbot without her. He drowned in a river near Salem on July 2, 1630, the day after his arrival. Elizabeth sailed to the Massachusetts Bay Colony on the ship Lyon with her infant daughter, the following year, arriving on Nov. 2, 1631. She was 21-years old. Gov. John Winthrop was her guardian and she married his son, Henry Winthrop, who died young. The governor arranged Elizabeth's next marriage to a wealthy landowner named Lt. Robert Feake, who was born in London in 1602. They were founders of Greenwich, Connecticut, where the home they built in 1645 still stands as one of the oldest homes in the country. She married third to William Hallett.
