​Jeremiah Shevalier was born abt. 1760 in Coxsackie, New York, while it was part of Albany County, which was later divided to form Greene County. He was a son of Peter & Mary Shevalier. Jeremiah settled in the east part of Virgil, Cortland County, New York, in 1804, near where his son John lived in 1878. He died on October 2, 1824, in Virgil, Cortland County, and is buried in Marathon.


Jeremiah was a son of Peter Chevalier, born Jan. 25, 1735, in Pomfret, Windham, Connecticut, and his wife, Mary. Peter's parents were Elias Shevalier and Mary Cady Adams (1714-1770).
