Biography
Samuel Torrance Hovey was born on July 1, 1812, possibly in Vermont, as reported on at least two censuses. He married in Tioga County, New York, to Mahala Jordan. They were counted on the census in Candor, Tioga County, New York, in 1840 and 1850. In 1855, he was counted on the census in Jasper, Steuben County, New York. The following year, in 1856, the family was living in Newton, Buchanan, Iowa. In 1860 he was in Cono, Quasqueton, Buchanan County, Iowa, where he died in 1871.
