John was born in 1598-1599, probably in England. He was about 22 years old when he sailed on the Mayflower.

John was hired as a cooper in part of the ship's crew. He was responsible for making and maintaining the wooden barrels used to store goods. He ended up joining the settlers and was a signer of the Mayflower Compact.
