Northwestern Connecticut was under the jurisdiction of New Haven County, but was transferred to Hartford County by 1738. Litchfield County was formed from parts of Fairfield County, Hartford County, and New Haven County, by an act of the Connecticut General Court on October 9, 1751. Upon its formation, the townships in Litchfield County were: Litchfield, Woodbury, New Milford, Harwinton, New Hartford, Barkhamsted, Hartland, Colebrook, Norfolk, Canaan, Salisbury, Kent, Sharon, Cornwall, Goshen, Torrington, and Winchester.
Litchfield County encompasses approximately 920 square miles* in the State of Connecticut.
