Montgomery County was originally called Tryon County, formed from parts of Albany County in 1772, with the County Seat at Rockville. The name was changed to Montgomery County in 1784. The following counties were formed from Montgomery County: Ontario County (1789), Herkimer County (1791), Otsego County (1791), Tioga County (1791), Hamilton County (1816), and Fulton County (1838). The County Seat of Montgomery County is Fonda.

Montgomery County encompasses approximately 405 square miles* in the State of New York.
