George H. Ensign of Madison County, N.Y.

Updated: Feb 4, 2019

George H. Ensign was an early settler of Madison County, New York. His biography was printed in "Our country and its people; a descriptive and biographical record of Madison County, New York", by John E. Smith, 1899. His photo and biography are found on page 639. This portrait was also supplied.

From his biography, we learn that he was born in Nelson, Madison County, New York. He was the son of Thomas and Laura (Bailey) Ensign. Laura was the daughter of James and Betsey Bailey. Thomas Ensign was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on Oct. 27, 1812 and was a son of Isaiah and Eunice (Vining) Ensign, who went to Madison County about 1823.

George's brothers and sisters were: James, Albert, Anson, Amelia (Mrs. Minor Anderson), and Cornelia Ensign.

Note: A connection to Esther Abigail Ensign, daughter of Royal Ensign and Sally Rood, has yet to be made with this family, although it seems likely they were related.
