Lineage of the Stanton Family - Descendants of George Stanton

Following is a summary of the Lineage of the Stanton Family, contributed by William Austin Macy, M.D. and published in Olde Ulster, Vol. III (1907), pp. 275–281, 311–314, 333–341, 370–376; Vol. IV (1908), pp. 17–24. (Click here to browse or search Olde Ulster Magazine).

The earliest Stanton generation in this line

Macy begins the lineage with George Stanton, who he says came to New York City about 1698 from the island of Jamaica, where George had been an extensive planter. George appears in the 1703 New York City census with a wife and four children under sixteen—two boys and two girls. Macy was quite candid that the precise parent-child connection to the next Stanton generation was inferred rather than conclusively documented. George's wife was named Hester or Esther. George died in 1708, and letters of administration were issued to his widow that July. Later New York tax records show property successively associated with the widow and sons George and Henry Stanton.

Macy also discussed several Stantons living in Jamaica during the seventeenth century, particularly Col. Edward Stanton, who died there in 1705 and identified Louth, Lincolnshire, England, as his native place. Macy believed these families belonged to the old English Stanton/Staunton/De Staunton family, but much of this portion is genealogical conjecture rather than a documented chain of descent.

Macy noted that he had not found the marriage record of Henry Stanton and Mary Blanck. Agnes Blanck's ancestry, however, could be traced through Dutch Reformed Church records to Jeurien and Tryntje (Claes) Blanck, in New Netherland by about 1630.

The Brink–Wynkoop connection

The lineage intersects the Brink family through Arie/Arien Gerritsen, who married at Kingston on October 17, 1686, Lysbet Lambertsen, baptized February 14, 1666, daughter of Lambert Huybertsen [Brink] and Hendrickje Cornelisse.

Their daughter Hendrica Nukerck, born November 7 and baptized November 11, 1692, married December 14, 1711, Cornelius Wynkoop, born May 30, 1688. Cornelius was a son of Major Johannes Wynkoop and Judith Fransen Bloodgood, daughter of Capt. Frans Jansen Bloetgoedt. Hendrica died before April 1747.

Their son Cornelius C. Wynkoop, born November 4 and baptized November 5, 1732, died August 6, 1796. He married April 24, 1760, Maria Catharina Ruhl, born November 14, 1741, daughter of Gustav Martin Ruhl and Maria Margaretha Bomper/Bimper.

The October installment specifically corrected the earlier printing of “George Pietersen Wynkoop” to Cornelius Pietersen Wynkoop, supplied the 1768 infant Cornelius, corrected the later Cornelius's dates, and said that Cornelius Wynkoop, the father, died in 1808 rather than 1796.

I. Maria Wynkoop and Henry Stanton

(I.) Maria Wynkoop, born July 1, 1762, baptized July 4 in New York City, died there July 14, 1828. She married April 1, 1786, Henry Stanton, born September 12, 1761, died October 20, 1830, son of George and Agnes (Blanck) Stanton. Henry had previously married Patience Levernich, daughter of William and Dorothy (Morse) Levernich, but had no children by that marriage.

Cornelius Wynkoop Stanton and Mary Stewart had one child, Mary Catherine Stanton, born February 19, 1819, who married October 21, 1845, Charles Griffen, born January 27, 1814 in Virginia and died February 11, 1879. No child survived to adulthood. (See Maria Wynkoop on Wikitree).

Richard Stanton (3), born January 20, 1789 in Brooklyn, died September 19, 1864. He married January 11, 1811, Elizabeth Waterbury, born June 6, 1789 at Darien or Stamford, Connecticut, died April 27, 1870 at Poughkeepsie, daughter of Phineas and Elizabeth (Lounsbury) Waterbury. Her brother was Noah Waterbury, associated with the early Brooklyn rope-walk/cordage industry.

Jonathan Hasbrouck Stanton (20) first married October 10, 1836, Lydia Hussey Macy, born November 27, 1815 at Nantucket, daughter of Josiah and Lydia (Hussey) Macy. They divorced. Lydia subsequently married William R. Austin; Jonathan married second Elizabeth Warner, born September 19, 1824 on Prince Edward Island and died December 26, 1873 in Brooklyn, daughter of Christian H. and Lydia (Nesbitt) Warner.

He married November 29, 1859, Jane Carpenter, born April 11, 1841, died June 2, 1901, daughter of Henry Mead and Rebecca Willets (Underhill) Carpenter.

Important discrepancies in the printed genealogy

There are several places where I would not import a date into a family tree without attaching a source note:

• Maria Wynkoop is initially printed as born July 21, 1762, despite a July 4 baptism; the next installment gives the sensible date July 1, 1762. I would use July 1 with a note about the earlier misprint.

• Cornelius C. Wynkoop's death was given as 1796 but was explicitly corrected to 1808.

• Henry Stanton's death appears as October 22, 1830 in the first installment and October 20, 1830 in the next.

• “George Pietersen Wynkoop” is explicitly corrected to Cornelius Pietersen Wynkoop.

• William Avery Stanton's death is explicitly corrected to January 10, 1899.

• Harriet Agnes Stanton's birth appears as 1816 in one installment and 1817 in another; her death is corrected to December 11, 1896.

• Julia Frances Stanton's birth appears as June 23 and July 23, 1820; death is explicitly corrected to February 8, 1856.

• Sophia Augusta Stanton's birth appears as April 25 and April 14, 1825.

• Richard Edwin Stanton's death appears as February 10 and February 16, 1886.

• Mary Catherine Stanton's later “about 1816” death date is impossible given both the earlier 1887 date and her children's births.

• Robert Nichols Lynch's birth appears as August 28 and October 28, 1854.

• Arthur Ingersoll Lockwood's birth appears as December 21 and December 31, 1858.

In conclusion, it appears this line has not yet been connected to my Stanton line, the line of Thomas Stanton of Connecticut.
