Biography
John Webster was born on August 16, 1590, in Cossington, Leicestershire, England. (He may have been born August 9 and baptized August 16). He married Agnes Smith on November 7, 1609 in Cossington and they came to America in the early 1630s with their five children and they had two more upon arrival.
They settled first at either Watertown or Newtown (now Cambridge), Massachusetts, but left there in 1636 with Thomas Hooker's company and started a new settlement at Hartford, Connecticut. There, Webster was among the original proprietors and largest landholders. He is named among the founders of the State of Connecticut and he served as Governor from 1656 to 1657. (From 1639 to 1659 all the governors' terms were a year or less). He was the 5th man to hold the position and he held the office in the 18th term. He was also a leading member of the Congregational Church of Hartford.
He died of fever on April 5, 1661 (or 1665?). His wife died in Hartford in 1667. He rests in Old Hadley Cemetery in Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
