THE ROOKIE

Officially titled "The Rookie (Red Sox Locker Room)", but also called "New Man on the Team" and "The Locker Room", Rockwell painted this for the March 2, 1957 cover of The Saturday Evening Post. The subjects chosen for this cover were players from the Boston Red Sox's starting lineup. The player with the 8 visible on his uniform is Frank Sullivan (#18), pitcher. He is sitting on the bench next to Jackie Jensen, right fielder. Ted Williams, left fielder, is standing in the center behind Jensen. Infielder, Bill Goodman is standing on the far right. Sammy White, catcher, is shown in the lower left corner. and the rookie himself was a highschool student, Sherman Safford, who Rockwell paid to pose for the painting. In 1986, the original painting sold for $600,000 and in 2014 it changed hands again. It was auctioned by Christie's Auction House for a whopping $22.5 million dollars.
