Gloucester was first used as a fishing camp as early as 1624 by the Dorchester Company but in 1639 the General Court declared it a fishing plantation called Cape Anne. It was called Gloucester as early as 1642. Part of Gloucester was used to form Rockport in 1840. (Vital Records of Gloucester, Massachusetts to 1850 (Marriages))
