"Numbering Bank Notes - All United States bank notes are printed in sheets of four, with one denomination on each sheet, and each bill is numbered and lettered twice. All notes of which the number when divided by four shows a remainder of one have the letter A upon them, the remainder of two have the letter B; of three, the letter C, and those which have no remainder have the letter D. - New York Times"
