Alaska - Established Jan. 3, 1959 - State Capital: Juneau
Alaska was acquired from Russia in 1867 and was referred to as the "Department of Alaska" until 1884, when it became the "District of Alaska". In 1912 it became an organized incorporated territory called "Alaska Territory" or "The Territory of Alaska" and in 1959, it was admitted to the Union and granted statehood.
