Seneca County was formed from part of Cayuga County in 1804. Part of Seneca and Cayuga Counties were taken to form Tompkins County in 1817. Then in 1823, Wayne County was formed from parts of Ontario and Seneca Counties. The County Seat is Ovid, Waterloo.
Ovid was part of Onondaga County in 1794. In 1802, the Town of Hector (Schuyler County) was formed from Ovid and in it was divided again in 1817 to form the Town of Covert.
