John Leonard was born in Ireland abt. 1778. He was counted on the 1850 Census in Springport, Cayuga, New York, reportedly age 72.

John may have had a daughter named Ann (b. abt, 1835 in Ireland), who was also counted on the census in Springport in 1850, living in the home of James and Amy Herron, who reported Ann's age as 12. This same Ann appears to have moved to Auburn by 1860 as the 1860 census shows Ann Leonard living in Auburn (2nd Ward), age 25.

John may have also had a son or relative named Cornelius, born abt. 1800, who was counted on the census in Genoa, Cayuga, New York, in 1860, at the age of 60. Cornelius lived with Margaret Leonard (age 22), and Mary Leonard (age 1).
