Stafford is 7 miles south of present day Byron. The town was first settled in 1798 as part of the Holland Purchase. Stafford was formed from parts of Batavia and LeRoy in 1820.

This may to be the "Mr. Leonard" mentioned on p. 177 of Beers' Gazetteer and biographical record of Genesee County, N.Y., 1788-1890, as follows: "In 1813, a Mr. Leonard built the house now owned by Solomon Masse, and used it as a tavern. He died, and Cotton Denio married his widow and assumed the duties of landlord." [Link]

His was one of the three Charles Leonard households in New York in 1820.
