The difference between a cemetery and a graveyard

Did you know there's a difference between a cemetery and a graveyard? If the burial grounds are on church property it is technically a graveyard. Cemeteries, traditionally, were burial places not associated with a church. Cemeteries could contain graves, tombs, and urns containing ashes, but church graveyards did not permit the burial of cremated ashes until about the 1960s.
