Manchester was first settled by colonists who arrived around 1672. The place was called Orford Parish, a parish of Hartford, at the time. When East Hartford was broken off from Hartford in 1783, Manchester was included in East Hartford's boundaries. The Town of Manchester wasn't incorporated until 1823.
