The Saybrook Colony was settled in 1635, at the mouth of the Connecticut River. The colony formally joined Connecticut in 1644. Saybrook covered an extensive territory, now divided into several townships, such as Chester (in 1836), and Old Saybrook (in 1854). The Congregational Church was formed at Saybrook in 1639, and the Second Church of Saybrook was formed in 1726 in what is now Westbrook. The third was formed in 1742 in what is now Chester. The town of Saybrook's name was changed to "Deep River" in 1947.
