Waterbury was settled in 1674 in what is called the "Town Plot" section of the city. The location was called Matetacoke by the Native Americans but the settlement was named Mattatuck in 1673. The settlement was vacated in 1675 on account of King Philip's War and but resumed afterwards on the east side of the Mad River. The name was changed to Waterbury in 1686, when it was admitted as the 28th town in the Colony of Connecticut.
