Schoharie County was formed from parts of Albany County and Otsego County in 1795. The County Seat is Schoharie. Early settlers included German Palatines sent by Queen Anne of England in 1712, to clear territory along the Schoharie River, followed by the Holland Dutch. Some came from the Connecticut Colony and others came from Ireland to peel hemlock bark for the tanneries. (Source: Folk-Lore from Schoharie County, New York)
Sharon, originally called 'New Dorlach' after a place in Germany, was settled in 1780, while still a part of Otsego County. Sharon was formed in 1797 from the Town of Schoharie.
