Cortland County was formed from the southern part of Onondaga County on April 8, 1808 and included only Virgil, Cincinnatus, Homer, Solon, and the southern half of Tully and Fabius, with additional divisions made to these towns later. The County Seat is Cortland.

Truxton was formed from the southern half of Fabius (Onondaga County) upon the formation of Cortland County in 1808. A portion of Solon was annexed to Truxton in 1811 and in 1858 part of Truxton was taken to form Cuyler.
