Biography

Newman A. Harvey was the son of John Clark Harvey and Betsy Stowell. He was born on the 25th of August, 1876, in Harford Mills, New York. In 1880, at the age of 4 years, he lived in Harford with his parents and three siblings: Myrtia, Lewis, and Lucy. In 1892 when the New York State Census was taken, his name was written “Numa Haryey”. He was 16 and the only child still living at home with his parents. He has not been found on the 1900 census. He appears to have married to a woman named Sarah, who he was divorced from in July of 1903. On the 9th of January, 1904, he married Gertrude E. Shirley. In 1905 he was living in Harford as a farmer. Their only son, Ernest, died at three days old on the 1st of December, 1906. In 1910, the family was living in Newark Valley. He was 33, Gertie was 32, and their daughters, Bessie, who was 2, and “Marion” (Mary) who was one month old, were also living in the home. In 1914 they moved to Berkshire, where Newman was an Engineer at the new Borden Plant. In 1920, he was living in Dryden with his wife and three daughters. His niece, Cora Harvey, who is called his daughter on the 1920 census, appears to have actually been the daughter of his brother, Lewis. In 1925, Newman was living in Groton with his wife and three daughters. They were the founders of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Groton. In 1930, they were still in Groton. Gertrude died in 1937, and when the census was taken in 1940, Newman was living at the home he owned at 137 Locke Road in Groton. He was living with Edna (Wing) Harvey, age 50, born in Pennsylvania. He also worked for Smith-Corona in Groton for about ten years. Newman died on the 29th of September, 1963, in Groton, and was buried in Willow Glen Cemetery in Dryden, Tompkins County (Lot 15-05).

Children

Newman Archelaus Harvey & Gertrude Esther Shirley were the parents of my ancestor,

  • Cora H. Harvey (possibly a daughter of Newman's brother Lewis).
  • Ernest Harvey, born December 1, 1906, at 3-days old.
  • Bessie May Harvey (1908-1986), married Earl J. Conklin and had one son. She was a nurse and an ordained minister. (See more).
  • Mary E. Harvey
  • Ruth Edna Harvey, born April 20, 1911, in Newark Valley, Tioga County, New York. Married Henry Hennip (1912-1997). She died on Sept. 15, 1978, in Ocala, Marion County, Florida, and was buried with her family in Willow Glen Cemetery in Dryden, New York.
