The First Congregational Church of Chatham, formerly part of Middletown, was organized in 1721 and the town of Chatham was incorporated in 1767. The church is now located in the town of Portland, which was set off from Chatham in 1841. The Second Congregational Church of Chatham was located at Middle Haddam and organized September 24, 1740. The Third Congregational Church of Chatham, organized November 30, 1748, is located at East Hampton.
Chatham was renamed "East Hampton" in 1915.
