Genealogy resources for Bridgeport, Fairfield County, Connecticut
Southwestern Connecticut was originally comprised of two main settlements - Fairfield and Stratford. These were divided by parishes, which gradually became their own towns. In between Fairfield and Stratford was a place that became known as Stratfield. There, a harbor village called Newfield began to grow in the 1760s, along the west bank of the Pequonnock. Later, in 1821, it was incorporated as the Borough of Bridgeport, and in 1836, Bridgeport was incorporated as a City.
