Southwestern Connecticut was originally comprised of two main settlements - Fairfield and Stratford. These large towns were divided by parishes, which gradually became their own towns. Ripton Parish was located in Stratford, but was separated in 1789, becoming the town of Huntington. Monroe was formed from part of Huntington in 1823. It was named after President James Monroe, the 5th President of the United States.
