Prior to its incorporation in 1778, Auburn, Leicester and Millbury were known as the South Parish of Worcester. The area was first settled in 1714. It was incorporated as the town of Ward (named after Gen. Artemas Ward), but the name was changed to Auburn in 1837, simply because the name was to similar to the nearby town of Ware, causing confusion for the postal service.
