  • Colonial and revolutionary families of Pennsylvania

Published in 1911 by John and Wilfred Jordan, "Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania; genealogical and personal memoirs" contains valuable information about Pennsylvania's Colonial and Revolutionary families. On these pages are hundreds of valuable histories, photos, coats of arms, and genealogies of long forgotten Pennsylvania men and women. Please note: An index is provided in Volume 3, but Volume 4 has no index. I flipped through each page and made note of the family names to make it a little easier for viewers to locate the name of interest, however, you can also use the search feature within each book to search for a name. (Open the link in a new window or tab to do this). Keep in mind some spelling varied in colonial times. I recommend browsing through each volume if you are researching old Pennsylvania families. • Oscar Mayo the Composer

While searching for information about my Mayo ancestors, I came across a composer named Oscar Mayo, adorning the pages of sheet music. He appears to have done much of his work in the 1870s and 1880s. With a little digging, I found out more about him. There were eight men named Oscar Mayo counted on the census in 1880. After reviewing their occupations, I recognized him as a "Music Teacher". He was born in Germany around 1836 and was living in South Evanston, Cook County, Illinois, when the 1880 census was taken. His wife, Mary, and three sons lived in the home: Elgin Mayo was 12 years old, Oscar Mayo was 7 years old, and Emil Mayo was 3 years old. [1] His photo is available on Findagrave, stating that he was born Dec 1, 1832, in Germany, and died on February 12, 1915, in Modesto, California[3]. • George H. Ensign of Madison County, N.Y.

George H. Ensign was an early settler of Madison County, New York. His biography was printed in "Our country and its people; a descriptive and biographical record of Madison County, New York", by John E. Smith, 1899. His photo and biography are found on page 639. This portrait was also supplied. From his biography, we learn that he was born in Nelson, Madison County, New York. He was the son of Thomas and Laura (Bailey) Ensign. Laura was the daughter of James and Betsey Bailey. Thomas Ensign was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on Oct. 27, 1812 and was a son of Isaiah and Eunice (Vining) Ensign, who went to Madison County about 1823. George's brothers and sisters were: James, Albert, Anson, Amelia (Mrs. Minor Anderson), and Cornelia Ensign. Note: A connection to Esther Abigail Ensign, daughter of Royal Ensign and Sally Rood, has yet to be made with this family, although it seems likely they were related.
